Carry On – A Lesson From my Dad

It has been nearly 3 months since my father suddenly passed way from a massive heart attack, while we were visiting them back home in Canada.  My world suddenly, changed and I had a strong sense that nothing would ever feel quite the same again.  I couldn’t believe it.  Having a wonderful breakfast together, than off to run some errands with my husband while my parents stayed with the kids, he died before we got home for lunch.  Here was an 81-year-old man, in a 70-year-old body, according to his […]

The Recurring Disconnect

Healing our sense of separation from God, our sense of disconnection with our source, is what our lives are all about. I know that when I feel cold—not giving of love, time, or good energy—what I’m truly feeling is that separation from the divine. Such times are guideposts, pointing me toward a deeper and richer life, full of meaning and peace. Personally, I’ve had a recurring situation for several years that forces me to take notice and go deeper within. A person in my life troubles me; when he appears I put on my best face and am nice, but […]

Grieving

Some of my friends have lost their husbands over the past few months, and with each loss I feel that I reexperience my father’s recent passing. We are poorly equipped to say good-bye to those we’ve known intimately for a long time. Such losses present us with a new way of living to which we must adjust. It can be difficult to find our way along the new path. I have to believe that when we are at the end of our experience with a loved one, the relationship carries on. Our memories soften the blow. We have them to […]

Success

As my oldest son in entering kindergarten this fall and going to a brand new school, we’ve talked about what it means to be a successful student and to be helpful to his teachers and classmates. He’s worried about how he’ll be treated by the “big kids” and about what it will be like to not have his younger brother nearby. When he talks about his concerns, I tell him that deep inside of him lives unlimited power to be a good person and to be successful at school. He must simply believe that he has everything he needs […]

Vision

Most of the thoughts that run through my mind over the course of the day are pretty positive. I truly believe that things are going to work out for the best and that I will be happy. By keeping my intention in this powerful truth, I point my life in the right direction. I just let go of thoughts that don’t really align with my highest good, and I practice being free of any thoughts of judgment.  (more…)

Intention

While the power of setting intentions in our lives is not a new idea in the world of practical spirituality, it still works for me. I find it useful to have something so little to carry with me that can have such a big impact on transforming my day. For some, setting intentions helps them conquer procrastination; for others it helps them stay centered in accomplishing certain tasks at hand. For myself, bringing a certain word with me into the day anchors me in a way is just good for my soul. A simple word— even using your dusty […]

Thoughts

When we become reflective, we consider what our thoughts are, what they are made of, and where they come from. Each of us experiences endless thoughts pulling us in various directions and to various depths of emotion. And unfortunately, many of us find ourselves having the same sad, if not downright toxic, thoughts over and over. When I find myself traveling back to a familiar, dark place in my mind, I know that if I pause for just a moment and ask myself, “What is really going on here?” I can change the flow of that energy. We certainly […]

Inner Peace

As I experience the ups and downs of my day-to-day life, it is often challenging to keep my actions aligned with what my heart center is trying to tell me. My inclination is to try to address a sense of urgency with something external, rather than by going within and knowing peace as my true essence. But when I “seek first the kingdom,” I arrive at that refuge of security and peace. (more…)

Divine Ideas

I’m often surprised by the ideas that pop into my head, delighted by the blessing of creativity. It’s so rewarding to envision something exciting, to act upon it, and to generate a wonderful experience. I see these ideas as seeds that are put into my consciousness, and I trust that they’re always planted at the right time and in the right way. I know that they’re in partnership with a greater sense of good that keeps steering me back to enjoy the fruits of my labor. (more…)

Guidance

Often, when I enter into a situation that troubles me, or run into a person who has never been that kind to me, I allow myself to get lost in the moment’s challenge, and I lose my way from God. Rather than grow in the experience, I’ll repeat it over and over—sometimes with new players, sometimes with the same ones. Not being grounded, my inner divine wisdom is barely audible, and although I need to slow down to the truth that is inside me, I’ll instead speed up with thoughts of discomfort and judgment.
